The Basics of Our House

Eden House is the newest edition to the ICC community. This 70-year-old house was know as Halcyon Co-op and later Prentis House Co-op before being acquired by ICC in 2003. With only 15 members, Eden is a small group of people who have built the culture of the house from scratch and continue to develop into a vibrant community.

Many of Eden's members choose this house for its close-knit community and homey atmosphere. The house consists of two double rooms and 11 single rooms, as well as a TV room, great porch, garage storage and sundeck that is a frequent site for sunbathing and social gatherings in the spring and summer.

Our Community Structure

Edenites generally pride themselves on being both laid-back and studious, but they are always ready to have a good time. A beautiful house on the southern end of West Campus, Eden is only 2 blocks from The UT campus. In addition, many of Eden's neighbors are other co-ops. This location makes Eden a great place to live for both students who like to frequent the library and those who like to party.

Vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals are usually served between 6:30 and 7:00 p.m. by our excellent array of cooks. All House members perform 4 hours to 5 hours worth of labor per week.

Eden allows house members to have pets on a vote-in basis. All animals must weigh less than 40 pounds and all cats must be spayed or neutered. Pets are voted in on a first come, first served basis.

Smoking is permitted in individual member rooms with door closed, and on the porches. Eden is open to lower and upper-division students on a vote-in basis. Interested individuals are asked to visit the house if possible to meet the house members prior to moving in.

Amenities include Roadrunner Internet Access, New York Times and Austin American Statesman subscriptions, beautiful restored building, private driveway, and a city bus stop across the street.

Because we want to get to know prospective members, and because we want prospective members to get a feel for Eden and ensure that it is a good fit for him/her, all prospective members should either:

(1) If in Austin, visit the House at least twice - for two dinners, or one dinner and one house meeting. The prospective member should schedule his/her visits with the membership officer at least 48 hours in advance.

(2) If outside Austin, have a Skype call with at least 3 house members present. The call would preferably take place during a house meeting, but given differences in time zones, the membership officer and prospective member should set up a time for the call to take place. This time will be posted to the house, and at least 3 house members must sign up at least 24 hours in advance for the meeting to take place. If 3 house members do not sign up, the call will be rescheduled. Once the meeting is confirmed, the membership officer will send a confirmation email with the Skype username that the prospective member will be contacted with.
